How Shazam uses big data to predict music's next big artists

I use Shazam a lot, it's an app which can tell the user what the songs or music is by recording them. It would then show the name of the name of the song or music on the phone. So, whenever you are, perhaps walking in the nightmarket, you hear a song which is so nice that you would like to download on your phone, however, you do not know what the name of the song is. In the past, either you give up or listen to the song carefully to see if you can guess the name of the song correctly. But now, with these kind of app, or I say function, we simply just need to have a click on our phone, then the rest is that the app will help you find what the song is.

So, now I'm telling you that the users make 15 million song identifications each day – and Shazam is using this data to predict artists that will receive mainstream attention next year.

Names on the list include Action Bronson, Banks as well as London-born Sam Smith, and a few others you may not have heard of just yet. But Shazam has good form when it comes to predicting artists who are likely to gain major traction; the music service anticipated that Lana del Ray would cause a stir in 2012 and their list of "Artists to Watch" in 2013 included the likes of French Montana, with both achieving major success in their respective years.

So how exactly does it work? Shazam combines critics' reviews alongside the number of people that have used Shazam to find a song to understand which artists are generating the most interest. This means that instead of only relying on what the criticism (positive or negative) of the music has been, Shazam is able to use consumer behavior to better judge the artists that have already started to pique the interests of listeners and are starting to gain traction.

Super cool right? Well I did not know that Shazam is doing this before.

  1. Shazam is an app that makes people find the music easily. If you are in the restaurant or on the street and accidentally listen to beautiful melody you really love it, you can just open this app and let it scan the music. It has large database and will recommend the best option for you. There are also lots of benefits of this app. For example, first, music recognition: Spotify's basic function is the greatest value to users. The experience of hearing a song and being unable to remember the source of the song is common. The added value here is both obvious and seamless. Second, song recommendation: Shazam provides recommendations to users based on nearby popular songs and songs heard by users. Competitors such as Spotify or Apple music do not provide this feature. However, I had seen that KKBOX also provide the function of detecting music, so I think this feature will become more and more popular in the near future. Third, Playlist planning: Shazam selects songs according to users and adds them to their music library. Shazam creates playlists for users. Competitors like Spotify offers similar services. Fourth, Media purchases/ transactions: Through partnerships, Shazam utilizes the ability to pair transactions/marketing promotions with songs, TV shows that users are listening to. Take some TV commercials for example, they encourage viewers to watch Shazam advertisements for transactions or for more information. The service benefits both users and marketers. Lastly, Particularity of trends: When apps such as Spotify display national trends, Shazam allows users to view city trends in song selection.
