Why your kids will want to be data scientists



In this generation, big data scientists become a very important and hot job in many companies.

Big data is being billed as the next big thing – the key to gaining a competitive advantage and increasing profitability for companies both big and small. The increasing importance of data analysis in decision making has boosted demand for employees with analytical skill sets, popularizing career paths that lead to big data jobs.

According to the research, the median salary of data scientists is  $150,000/year, which is higher than the doctor and lawyer, that the reason why data scientist become a dream job for children.

Employees with big data skills are in high demand. The McKinsey Global Institute estimated in a 2011 report that by 2018, there will be 4 million big data-related jobs in the United States that require quantitative and analytical skills. However, the position stated that there may be a shortage of 1.5 million data-savvy managers and analysts.

One of my predictions for the analytics hiring market this year was that data scientists would be embedded in analytics groups, and with the Internet of Things trend, the increase in wearables, social media sentiment analysis and many more applications for data science, it’s no wonder this career has so much buzz around it. With the increase in demand, shortage of talent, high salaries and applications in every industry, data science is becoming a good option for career success.

The road to that success begins with a strong early foundation in math, and (perhaps) some nudging from the parents. I can’t tell you how excited I was when my daughter, who started college this year at Macalester, changed her major to math, as I believe strongly that this is a career path that offers a bright future. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll have a data scientist in the family.

    I think the article is interesting because data scientist is the popular job nowadays. I remember few years ago, departments related to big data are popular. As the article indicates, first, it’s the job that is likely to get the higher salary. That’s the reason for people to interest in it. In addition, a job seeker’s market. Because of the advanced technology is more and more popular, talents that market seeks for is keep changing. However, the society is unstable. Due to the coronavirus this year, lots of Big data scientists are laid off. Because if you want to collect the data and build the database, it needs lots of customer or spend some time or energy on it. Yet, because of the epidemic, the global economies slow down and many businesses are affected. I think the way to go through the hard period is to keep learning new knowledge and improving ourselves. If people would like to become a data scientist in the future, the article provides suggestion that it is essential to gain some experience related to this industry, and without a doubt, it’ is the role that requires advanced degree and computing background. To become the data analyst, I think the most important factor is that people need to understand the market dynamics, and possess the ability of guiding the company to the right way and make profits. There is a quote said “ it’s never too old to learn”. Therefore, there are lots of universities provide the analytic-focus programs. It’s a good resource for people who want to devote in this field.
