Reflection on the article “Instagram is a Surprisingly Effective Big Data Source”

Instagram being the titan in the realm of social media, over eight hundred million active users are on it each month. Fifty one percent of this user base have access to it every day. Ninety-five million videos and photos are uploaded to the platform every single day. Since the beginning of It in 2010, more than forty billion photos and videos have been shared in a sum.
Undoubtedly, according to the numbers above, Instagram is a like a shipwreck full of the treasure of data. With such huge amount of big data, individuals or businesses can actually take advantage of it.  Among countless aspects, there are two chief ways one can utilize this big data, and they are encapsulated as follow.  First, one can reveal consumer insights with his/her posts.  Moreover, the data Instagram Stories can also be mined in another way.
In the first place, when an individual or a corporation with a business profile upload a number of posts, he/she/it will be able to know the time (peak hours) his/her/its target audience usually spend on Instagram, the age distribution, and even the gender percentage.  This way, one will be capable of knowing what group of people are into his/her products or ideas.  Besides, Instagram Stories can also be used to collect data. From Stories, one can see how many times is each story seen, shared, and replied as well as how many times one’s profit is visited and how many times one’s website is clicked.  With the above mentioned, one can easily analyzed what kind of stories his/her target audience like and what don’t. That is, he/her can use this information to create something that meet the needs of the target customers more.

All in all, the ways we can utilize Instagram are infinite. Nevertheless, what we can know is that Instagram is truly a Godzilla for big data usage.
