NIH opens COVID-19 big data hub to researchers

This article talks about a new research hub launched by the National Institutes of Health, that will be used to fight against the COVID 19.

The NIH (National Institutes of Health) launched a new research hub to fight against the COVID 19. This research hub is cloud-based, is secure and will use machine learning to fight against COVID 19 in a lot of ways. Some of examples are informing best practices for resource allocation, drug discovery and treatment options.

This data plataform is part of N3C, that is, the NIH's National COVID Cohort Collaborative. It can help researchers to learn how to treat patients and also help them to find which direction they need to take, what are the best next step to take. They will gather a lot of information and data (clinical, laboratory and diagnostic) from both hospitals and health care plans, these data will be analyzed and can help finding good and effective ways to battle against the virus.

The access to this large data repository can bring us a lot of answers to the questions we could not answer before, because of disparate and scattered patient data. The analysis of these data can give us a better idea of which patients need what. For example, we can have a better idea of which patients needs dialysis, which patients need ventilators or require different treatments.

N3C launched with a lot of institutions contributing with the data. Demographics, symptoms, medications, lab test results, outcomes, etc. These data will be open and available to all approved users, it does not matter if this user contributed or not to the database. This data will be available for approved users to analyze it inside of the platform, they will not be able to remove or download this data from the platform.

I like to learn how big data is being used to fight against COVID-19, because it is a big problem that the world is suffering with right now, so all help is welcome!

  1. This article really highlights the importance of big data and shows why currently big data which is itself is Big data is a field that treats ways to analyze, systematically extract information from, or otherwise deal with data sets that are too large or complex to be dealt with by traditional data-processing application software. Data with many cases (rows) offer greater statistical power, while data with higher complexity (more attributes or columns) may lead to a higher false discovery rate Big data challenges include capturing data, data storage, data analysis, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, querying, updating, information privacy and data source. Big data was originally associated with three key concepts: volume, variety, and velocity. When we handle big data, we may not sample but simply observe and track what happens. Therefore, big data often includes data with sizes that exceed the capacity of traditional software to process within an acceptable time and value and i really that articles like this highlight the usefulness and endless possibilities that big data provide, not only in this day and age but for the future aswell.
