  During the pandemic of Coronavirus, Taiwan is doing very well to stop the virus and protect its people. In the beginning, data was predicted Taiwan to be hard hit by the coronavirus. However, Taiwan has proven that those predicted was totally wrong. So, how Taiwan can stop the virus so successfully? The main reason is well-developed big data analytics.

  Taiwan is well served with national health insurance. Everyone's citizens are protected by health insurance. Every people when they go to a clinic or hospital may use their health insurance card. So, that allows the government to collect the health data. This system is put to good use during this time.

  The database allowed them case identification by generating real-time alerts during a clinical visit based on travel history and clinical symptoms. Also, the Taiwan government well-used the QR code scanning and online reporting of travel history and health symptoms. Moreover, for those who had traveled to high-risk areas were quarantined at home and tracked through their mobile phones to ensure that they stayed home during the incubation period.

   Taiwan's epidemic command center is using big data to control the virus spreading. Also including border control from the air and sea, case identification, quarantine of suspicious cases, educating the public while fighting misinformation, and negotiating with other countries. Today, Taiwan is the place very near China but confirmed cases and deaths are less than in other Asia countries. Therefore, big data input an important effort at this time and set an international role in the world. Taiwan can help and Taiwan is helping.

  1. Because in Taiwan, the Taiwanese government gave treatments before the COVID-19 outbreak. On the other hand, in Japan, although the number of deaths was small due to the slow movement of the government, the number of infected people is still increasing. Analyzing the big data in the papers, some fields in which research will continue to develop will become apparent. The keyword that Shinya Yamanaka is paying attention to is “BCG”.

    "BCG" is a tuberculosis vaccine that has been featured in several articles since March. In one of them, we compared the mortality rates of the new corona between countries that were inoculated with "BCG" and those that were not. It is said that the mortality rate of the countries inoculated with "BCG" including Japan tends to below.

    Mr. Yamanaka explained why he is paying attention to "BCG" as follows.

    "BCG is originally a vaccine against tuberculosis, but it has long been said that it might also have a protective effect against other infections. It is not recommended to receive another BCG vaccination for corona.”
