Nowadays, many industries shift their business method into “go green” for a better environment. Hotels as a part of travel industry also started to go green. However, in a hotel’s operational expenses, energy consumption contributes a lot. By using IoT and big data technologies, hotels can do energy saving and management cost saving because it can connect to smart devices that can help to achieve this objective. IoT and big data through smart devices can control functions such as lights, smart thermostats, sensors, automatic blinds, and air conditioners.

Sensing the environment
In the article, the author uses the hotel’s lobby as an example because it is one of the common areas with the possibility of many people gather up. IoT and big data technologies will take part in detecting the crowdedness of the area. It means that if the area is full of people, smart devices can adjust the room temperature and the use of lights. Once the number of people started to decrease in the lobby, the devices will change to energy savings mode.

The role of data
Besides sensing the environment, smart devices also provide the data important for the operator. They will interpret and analyze the data so the hotel’s management can gain a better understanding of customer’s energy usage also discover some potential problems.

By reading this article, we can see that IoT and big data took an important role for a better future and environment. Also, I think that this kind of technology can be useful for other industries.
