How Netflix used big data and analytics to generate billions
I am a Netflix addict-or. When I first entered the main page, thousands of series and movies bombed out in my sight. After watching several movies to some extent, I found that the main page will keep changing all the time which I like very much. Sometimes, it will show some videos which I had watched for a long time ago. It makes me want to review it again. Also, I always wonder why Netflix can often recommend me so many series based on my interests. This article just gave me some insights and views.
It also talks about how Netflix collects data from its subscribers. For example, there is a thumbs up/down bottom for subscribers. They can tell whether it is good or not by clicking the bottom. Then, Netflix can collect all the data to create a database. Finally, it can put all the data and run the algorithm. It is pretty smart for Netflix to do so.
Netflix also creates different trailers. Therefore, for new-watchers, it can attract their attention to watch more. To my surprise, Netflix can analyze the most I watched before. If I prefer to watch women as the main characters. It would recommend me more featured by women. Like my Netflix account, there is a lot of recommendation of horror movies. Moreover, every time I surf the videos on Netflix. A lot of movies are rating from 0-100%. Big data algorithms can record my watching history, so Netflix can create customized main pages for each subscriber.
To sum up, Netflix can generate 151 million subscribers, leading the first in the streaming industry must have its own reasons.
