Comment 3:
Big data in our daily life (From Grace Li, 6/22)

Big data indeed change our life a lot so I want to figure out some exactly examples of what big data really change our life. That’s the reason why I choose the article provided by Grace Li.

First, the article talking about the influences on the map. In the past, there was only a paper map available for us to read. Sometimes, the problem of using paper maps really annoying a lot. For example, people need to keep different versions of the map to handle the different regions they may want to go to. Also, the paper map cannot let us figure out the information we need at once. However, with the entering of big data, the mobile map has replaced the traditional paper map gradually. There is also a new invention called GPS technology. people can know where are their destination exactly located or how long it will take to arrive at the place.

Next is about the influence big data has brought to online shopping. If the retailers only have the customers’ information, it is still not enough to analyze the preferences of their target market. By connecting the whole operating processes from customers and keep saving the profile of each customer, the retailing process could be easier and more successful.

For point number three, the article mentions that by using big data, the urban planner can develop a new way of their urban planning. It takes public transportation as an example. The planner can receive real-time tracking result from their customers, such as the times accident happens and when does the traffic congestion happen.

The fourth point listed in the article is about energy consumption. Smart meters measure the energy people spend in a period and give a result to adjust the distribution of energy.

The last point is wearable. Wearable controls everything in our life. For example, how long have you walk within one day or how long you spend on sleeping every day, can all be recorded by wearables rather than writing down with paper and pen. Furthermore, the records can be transformed into helpful data for people to take care of themselves.
