There are 1.3 million people moving into cities each week, and by 2040, 65% of the world’s population is expected to be living in cities, with 90% of this urban population growth set to occur in Africa and Asia. So, experts are trying to improve the quality of life in our cities to be a smart city. Smart city is the city that uses technology to improve every aspect of city operations and enhance the services it offers to its residents.
Nowadays, we already use some big data, Internet of Things and distributed sensors Technology in our life such as displays that can tell you the best route to go on, and it could adapt upon the environment, for example, weather or traffic in real time.
Information and communications technology (ICT) plays a major role in smart cities by making data that’s collected through information technology components available. This technology, also called the Internet of Things (IoT), works by communicating between connected devices while exchanging data that requires internet, wireless connections, and other communication mediums.
Here are some examples of cities that use big data and IoT to improve their lives. The city of Nanjing, China, has installed sensors into 10,000 taxis, 7,000 buses and 1 million private cars. The resulting data is transferred daily to the Nanjing Information Center, where experts are able to centralize and analyze traffic data and send updates to commuters on their smartphones. With these data insights, government officials have created new traffic routes to improve congestion, without spending money on new roads.
As you can see, in the future big data will change the city we know to another look, people life will have more convenient.
Big data is now a common thing that is very important for everybody. To be honest, it is not only for us, the people to live a normal life and make it become more worthy, but it is for everybody, the company, the coworker, the government, basically everybody in this planet can use the data to make their lives become better and better. By combining big data, with the city's development, it is for sure can improve every aspect of operation and enhance the quality of life and services for its residence. Big data, as I said, it is now a common thing for us, for example, the sensors, the technology and many more that are useful for us but might sometimes can not be clearly seen. Thos technologies are called "Information and communications technology" or "ICT" and has another name which is "Internet of Things" or "IoT" this technology can help us with our daily life basis, for example, weather forecasting, or real time traffic system. However, by doing this, it has to work with other devices to exchange the data such as, wireless connection, internet and other communication median. There are so many cities in this world now that involves big data with their city's development, for example, the city of Nanjing, China that has installed the sensors in to ten thousand taxis, seven thousand buses, and one million private cars. And by doing that, the city will get the collected data that will transferred real time to the Nanjing Information center and they can let the expert to analyse all of the collected data and update it to the connected users. With this data insight, it can help the city to improve easily and in a good and efficient way.
