Big data in the time of coronavirus (COVID-19)
In the end of 2019, China Wuhan outbroke the Coronavirus and spread all over the world. We watched daily reports about how many people died because of the Coronavirus in the world, especially in European countries and United States. In this article, the author interviewed with Sy Pretorius, MD, who serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical & Scientific Officer for Parexel, for understand how to use big data to forecast and to know the reach and impact of Coronavirus.
They used COVID-19 tracker to continuously collect sources from around the world, and used those sources to help healthcare workers, scientists, epidemiologists and policymakers to aggregate and integrate the data. Although they have not yet had the ability to effectively leverage the power of big data to find out the cure of Coronavirus, there are still many opportunities to make big data more influence on society and some industry. The model of big data can support them to predict the pandemic, their ability to contain and respond with treatment is dependent upon early detection and their ability to leverage as much data as can be aggregated on infected individuals.
Now, Coronavirus is still devastating the world and haven’t develop the right solution yet. Some professionals can only use big data to predict and try to avoid the disaster happen again. Although big data can help to synthesize some information about the number of population health, our mobility and lifestyle patterns for some professionals to assess the potential incidence and behavior of a condition. We still have to take care of ourselves and always wear a mask in public places.
