Big Data in Music

Big Data in Music

In the article, it says that in music industry, parts of them are increasingly using predictive and prescriptive data analytics to study listening habits and make suggestions to fans based on their prior consumption. The process makes analytics part of the art.

Who are their target will be important for them. According to Statista, an online statistics aggregator. Paid and free subscription streaming services such as Spotify accounted for 32 percent of the market in 2014 – up from merely 9 percent in 2008, Statista reported.

Furthermore, the increased competition among the listening services means more of the startups are using data analytics to their advantage to stay on top of subscribers' habits and preferences. Spotify could be ahead of the pack as it recently purchased new data specialist companies to examine the behaviors of its listeners.

So, besides "who's streaming", now is time to see "how are they listening". According to Fortune magazine, The data analytics used allows the service to detect customer patterns i.e. if someone skipped a track by a certain artist, how many times they played the same song or album, etc. It also uses algorithms to make suggestions of particular songs or mixes similar to music and bands a patron rated highly.

Last by embracing the information can not only help labels but also maintain the "middle class" of bands and musicians who may not be superstars like Taylor Swift, but who sell out smaller venues.

  1. The article uses Spotify as an example, for me, personally, a KKBOX user, it has lots of similar points compares to Spotify or other online music platforms. First, KKBOX uses big data analysis as its tools to predict what certain customers will like or interested in. For example, when I listened BIGBANG’s hit songs, then after a few days, on the home page, I can find that KKBOX recommends some other BIGBANG’s songs which are not that popular. KKBOX can let users search what they want and then provide services and streaming products. Second, KKBOX can memorize what you like or what kind of style you are searching for and then provide similar concept of songs that we may interest in. So in this service, not only users can experient similar songs but also KKBOX can improve its own brand image that it can provide such a convenient service to users. Third is that KKBOX can count how many times you are listening to a certain song, and at the end of the year, you can explore what songs you had listened to most. What an interesting design. So that is why some people do not choose Spotify but choose KKBOX, because they have almost the same service. The difference is that one provides more western songs while another one provides more eastern songs. You can choose what you prefer based on your original habit. Or if you don’t want to pay on this kind of entertainment media, then Youtube will be the best option for you.
