Big data is widely used in every industry, and also the airline industry, as you can say big data plays a big role in aviation, so today I'm going to talk about how data can enhance airline operations and how are most airlines benefiting from big data.
Big data technology can transform the way airlines do business. By prioritizing data collection and analysis, even small airlines can respond to customer demands and market trends with precision and agility.
For example, with big data, airlines can identify new efficiencies. Greater computational power has allowed airlines to gather and process huge volumes of data that enable them to analyze fuel consumption on a per-trip basis. For instance, Southwest Airlines collects data from sensors embedded in aircraft that measure wind speed, temperature, and plane weight alongside fuel consumption.By capturing flight incident data, regulators can improve safety across the aviation industry. Recently, the European Aviation Safety Agency launched the Data4Safety program, which collects and analyzes in-flight telemetry data, air traffic control information, and weather forecasts to detect risk. The program will allow regulators to determine safety risks and advise stakeholders. By combining big data analytics and computational power, this program aims to strengthen weak links in the aviation chain.Big data can also help airlines to enhance customer service. Instead of simply identifying successful products, airlines can use big data to drill down into customers’ buying habits. By analyzing variables and aggregating historic information, airlines can predict and model customer behavior to generate personalized offers. This smart approach not only drives ticket sales, it also enhances opportunities for upselling, such as baggage fees and onboard refreshments.
Big data presents a multitude of opportunities for the aviation industry. Through analysis, they can streamline maintenance, improve safety, and cut costs. Furthermore, big datacan help airlines to have a better understanding of their customer. They can study each individual's behavior, track their preferences, and project future demands. By leveraging big data, airlines can develop their operations and marketing strategy, enabling them to stand out in an intensely competitive market.

After reading this article, I have learn about Big Data is very helpful in airline industry. With combined weather forecasting data, booking, check-in, boarding, during flight data and airport communication, airlines can use big data analytic to improve efficiency, services and operations. This article mentioned many benefits of using big data; first, Smarter maintenance which big data can help to identify new efficiencies and better maintenance. Airlines can use this benefit to improve mechanical analysis, in-flight metrics, and shop findings , thus it can save a lot of repair cost. Second, Safer flights which use big data analytic to collect flight incident data, regulators, in-flight telemetry data, air traffic control information, and weather forecasts, thus airlines can improve safety across the aviation industry. Third, Improve service which use big data to enhance customer service by analyzing customer behavior like what promotion that they prefer, or customers’ buying habits.
Moreover, this article described about case studies in airline industry. For example, United airlines use big data to analyze their customer behavior to improve and understand them and respond their need to encourage customer loyalty to their airlines. Additionally, Southwest Airlines use big data to collect and analyze in-flight data, pilot reports, warning reports, control positions, and air traffic control communications, thus it can helps airline to improve safety and streamline operations. Therefore, this article showed me a lot of benefits of big data in airline industry that help airlines to develop, enhance their services, operations, safety. These huge advantages lead people to have better airline transportation and service.
