Big data has been adopted to many sectors of industries including logistics. Big data can give an improvement in the efficiency of distribution and production networks. The study clearly indicates that a number of companies have started adopting big data by realizing the benefits big data can provide the impact it can have on their organizations. So, let us see how big data can be utilized in the case of logistics and supply chain management:

1. Using big data in the transportation of goods
With big data, the entire process of transportation from suppliers to customers can be tracked. If the delivery vehicle gets stuck in a traffic jam, the goods can’t be delivered on time, hence big data technology can provide the customers with an estimate of the time the goods can be delivered. It also benefits the companies to track the delivery person, vehicle, and goods.

2. Using big data for route optimization
big data can give the shortest route possible by the vehicle for delivery. The supplier also can save a large amount of money that usually invested in fuel.

3. Using big data for delivering perishable goods
With the support of sensors along with big data technology, companies can deliver quality products to their customers. The temperature sensors can be installed in the delivery vehicle, which can help monitor and observe the quality of the product stored in the vehicle.

4. Using big data for warehouse management
it can help in maintaining and tracking the stock of their supplies for more efficient warehouse management.

5. Using big data for improving customer service
using big data technology through social media and surveys can help in improving customer service to meet their customer expectations and strengthen their relationship with their customers.

  1. For me, this is a really interesting article, especially because we are also taking logistics class this semester, so learning about these two subjects together is really nice, we can see the connections and it makes learning both subjects more interesting! Big Data seems like a really big “revolution” in business, and of course logistics companies would not like to be out of it. As we have seen in the article Big Data can be used to improve a company in a lot of ways, such as improving the company’s effectiveness and efficiency and it can have a big impact in the company.
So by reading the article, we can have a better idea on how big data can influence, change and improve logistics.
So first, we learned that big data can improve transportation by using data to track the entire process. It can also estimate the delivery time and inform the customer if there is any problem during the delivery process, and by doing this, it can avoid bigger problems.
Also related with the transportation, data can be used to search for the best route possible, this can be good for both the company and the customer. The customer get the product faster and the company will spend less time and fuel on the delivery process.
For delivering perishable goods, it is cool to know that they are using big data to monitor the condition and quality of the products during the delivery. This way everyone can get higher quality products.
It can also help in inventory and improving the customer service.
It is so nice to learn how two subjects that we are learning this semester can be related in many ways! I think it is really interesting and that big data is really important now, and will be even more important in the future.
