Ultimate Privacy Will Soon Be Lost
Of course every company will always respect customer’s privacy, but data breaches, unintended abuse of data and unauthorized publishing of data seem to be happening. Now, it is not hard to look for people’s data, they happen to scatter in all places such as social media sites, shopping sites, or even from gym memberships. One most sensitive data is a person’s DNA. Many have not known that DNA is actually being shared, published and studied in many ways. Studies have shown that over 1 million Americans have shared their DNA with genealogical sites and many hundreds more do the same each week.
Lately, law enforcers used DNA that are given by family members to genealogical sites to identify and charge the Golden State killer. Another 13 murder suspects have been found simply through this intelligent idea. DNA family searching will soon be a standard procedure for investigating crimes.
Nevertheless, this is still a dilemma whether having DNA available online will ease the human life such as better health and treatment options, easier to find organ donors or it will just be an abuse to people’s privacy, it may create an easier path for fraud or scam. Our DNA can be captured, stored, published, shared and liked to our identity without or permission or even notice. It feels like there is no protection against our own DNA.
When this do happen, DNA are collected through the internet, everyone will be able to find nearly all of their biological relatives . This ability to reverse DNA matches and identify family members do sound incredible but it’s also an incredible invasion of privacy with deep consequences.
This is a good topic to debate about security privacy crisis. From what I have seen all over the internet especially YouTube, where some YouTubers do some DNA and saliva test to find their lost relatives, which ancestry they belong to, and food allergic detection. The process is that, they will receive a box of instructions and tools to put the blood or saliva and then send it back to the company, while they are waiting for a couple of weeks to get the result on their website. The information is clearly shared on the internet even though they will email you an ID and password, but we believed that it will still can be leaked by some hijackers.
ReplyDeleteThe question is, do they aware of the effect caused by that? With or without permission, it is conceivable that one’s relatives can be fully published. This can lead into a serious crime where the criminals can gain an easy access of their victim information from the internet. some of us share our personal information without hesitation on the internet where it can be seen by thousands or millions of people. DNA is our data. It defines us and now it can be used to define us literally.
Finally, big data clearly give us so many advantages but we can’t ignore all the bad influence we could also get from that innovative technologies. Big data really is smart but do not forget that we have to be smarter in order to use it. Always be careful while sharing important data or else you will get in trouble.

DNA is something that only us have and it is quite like our finger print where no one should have the exact same and this is what sets us apart. However, though there are benefits in sharing your DNA online, I personally believe that the negative side is more visible.
The Golden State Killer case was solved with the help of DNA from relatives. This means that by giving your DNA available online, you are not the only one affected but you are also providing information about those related to you including distant cousins. When your relatives, including distant ones whom you may not even know, provide their DNA, they are also providing genetic information about you. So if my cousin shares his/her DNA online and they can find mine through it, can I really call it within my consent?
Not to mention, laws covering genetic privacy not broad enough. The only law currently covering genetic privacy, the Genetic Information Non-discrimination Act (also known as GINA) is too narrow in its focus on banning employers or insurance companies from accessing this information. There should be more law apart from restricting people from accessing information like selling information, misuse of information, and lots of other cases. Companies are saying that they would protect the customers’ privacy and setting it as their highest priority but we may never know as there is not much law that punishes them if they misuse the information.
All in all, I think that each individual should keep our own data (DNA) maintain ownership of it. I think that is the safest.

It is really good choice of article. But, personally it’s not really surprising for me to know this kind of problem exist now. Because, our DNA is our identity. If our identity is up online everyone can steal our identity without our concern. This is example of negative result for advanced in technology. Giving out our finger print, is become normal thing to do now, but we don’t know what they going to use our identity for. Because of that so many identities can be passed around in the company.
In this article we have positive example on use of our DNA correctly, like how they use DNA that are given by family members to genealogical sites to identify and charge the Golden State killer. It is shows there are some positive use in giving out our DNA. But people keep focused on Negative side more than positive side. I know this is a dangerous thing. What happened if they sell our identity, they give it to another party to use. There is nothing we could do if our identity is already exposed, but doesn’t mean we have to be paranoid about it. If we can’t stop thinking about leaked information about ourselves, then first thing we should do is not giving out our personal information to much, or give it to trustable source and also always be careful about our decision making. Maybe there is some positive thing that would happened if we given out our identity with responsibility.
