Short history of big data

Short History of big data
Where does Big data comes from?
The term Big Data has been used since early 1990's. It is used to support decision making process. Now days the amount of data has been increasing very fast that is impossible to analyse all of it. The need of process these increasingly large and unstructured data sets is called Big data. The evolution of these process is mainly separated in 3 phases each one with different characteristics and capabilities.
         Big Data phase 1
It is originated by the longstanding domain of database management. It relies on  the storage, extraction and optimization techniques that are common in Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS). Data management and data warehousing are considered the main components of this phase.
        Big Data phase 2
In the early 2000 the internet started to offer data collections and analysis opportunities. Some big companies started to analyse user behavior by analyzing click rates, location and search logs. Besides the normal structured data types, organizations now needed to find new approaches and storage solutions to deal with these new data types in order to effectively analyse them.
        Big Data phase 3
Even though there is still a lot of data in the web that has not being analyzed, there is a new urge to analyse information coming from mobile phones. Phones give us the opportunity to analyse behavioral data like search queries and track GPS signal so it is also possible to track movement, physical behavior and health related data because of the apps.
The rise of sensor-based internet-enabled devices is increasing the data generation like never before. Now we have refrigerators that are generating millions of zettabytes of data everyday.

  1. To be honest, before I became a business school student and attend the big data analytics class, I never feel interested in the subject of big data. However, after learning big data and reading some related articles, I realized that big data is a prominent subject to know and learn. I believe that in the near future, it’s going to be one of the noteworthy knowledges everyone should notice, especially when we are going to work in a business company. And of all the articles that my classmates choose to discuss in this blogger website, I think Fernanda pick a notable one. Most of people talked about how big data will change the future, discuss many innovations because of big data, but it is also good to look back and learn the history of big data itself.

Through this article, I just learned that big data in terms of data analysis and analytics has been there since long time ago. Actually, it has been started since the ancient Egyptians era when they tried to capture all existing ‘data’ in the library of Alexandria.

Moreover, the article illustrates evolution of big data into 3 main phases just like what Fernanda wrote above and here I just want to summarize it again. First is big data phase 1.0 with the Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) based. Second is big data phase 2.0 with the internet and web-based. Last one is big data phase 3.0 with a focus on mobile and sensor-based content.

To sum up, it is important to at least know each phase characteristics and capabilities before we understand the context of big data in today’s world.
