University application is one of the most nerve-wracking periods of a student's education life. In the past, we used to apply to college by going to the university personally, filling out forms, and also paying lots of application fees. This article describes how universities nowadays use big data to accept their students based on their data. Using big data as a way of admission can bring benefits and can also be a threat to students.
On the positive side, students can now easily choose a university that suits their capability. Some students used to spend hours researching the university that they can afford, the suitable teaching method, school location, etc. Nowadays, big data is doing all the work. Big data uses an algorithm to gather student's financial capabilities, report scores, behavior, etc, and suggested them with a list of colleges that may be the one for them. From the list, students can choose their suitable school easily and more accurately. Most importantly, it is all for free so this can be a very useful tool for many.
On the other side, this means that university admissions offices can study their soon-to-be students through their social media, profile, etc to predict their behavior. They can also see their financial capabilities and predict the percentage that the student will enroll if they were accepted, to what extent the school needs to provide financial aid, or how much will the student contribute to the school. This makes university applications more stressful for students as they are judged by many different factors outside their control.

As a student myself, it is surely a new insight for me to see how actually school or university select the right students to accept into their place. So, when I saw this blog that Jacqueline wrote, it immediately caught my eyes. I really like how Jacqueline summarized all the important things from the article into a short yet really clear writing. When I read her post, it doesn’t make me feel confused at all because she made it really easy to understand.
After reading this article, I learned the fact that university also uses big data to eliminate the candidate for their future students. College admission will use social media, profile, et cetera to predict the student’s behavior. Not just through social media but they also tried to count their financial capabilities to predict the percentage that the student will enroll if they were accepted. As with this big data innovation, it helps the university and school to choose their most fitted student out of all the application. But this situation gives a disadvantage for the students’ side because it will make university or school application more difficult and stressful. Despite the downside, there is also an advantage for the student. With the help of big data student can easily choose the right university or school based on their capabilities. The way it works is big data algorithm can gather the student’s financial capabilities, past school report, behavior, and so on and then process it into a list of university well suited for the student.
