How Big Data is Revolutionizing the Food Industry

This article introduces a new concept about the big data of application in food industry. It’s crucial to use big data technology to understand their customers. The author uses bacon in the menu to illustrate it, they do a survey and use data mining techniques to see if bacon is actually the necessary food in the menu. However, the result is that the bacon dessert lovers don’t like to add it in menu.

Besides, they come up with an idea that is using big data to create a new menu. The computer selects the best quality and novelty then offer the recipes to the team to test in the kitchen. For example, IBM creates a program to establish data recipe, first, set some parameters to the food choice. Second, generate new ideas according to original recipes. Finally, the recipe set as a list and goes into kitchen to prove it .

For those who are tired of eating same meals can taste this new stuff. Furthermore, big data helps food industry to improve their business efficiency. The fast food companies uses it to improve drive thru. They run the model to see what meal is the hot sale and thus increase the demand. Also, when the queue is long, the data science applications automatically shows only foods that can be prepared within a short time.

In the near future, I believe that the big data will be more accessible to our daily life. Thanks to big data techniques, it makes us more convenient and we can see more applications to helps us improve efficiency.

  2. I found that this article is really interesting yet unique. Personally, I like to discuss anything regarding to food, so I really enjoy reading this article. Food industry as one of the essential sectors in the world has started to use the emerging technology to improve their services for a better customers’ experience, in this case they use Big Data and data mining. I never thought that Big Data will penetrate to food industry, thus, this article gave me new insights and knowledge about how important Big Data is in our daily life.
The article stated that Big Data will make a company understand their customers better, increase their efficiency and even to discover something new like new recipes. Like what Leo stated above, the author uses bacon as an example to know customers’ personal preferences, whether bacon needs to be added in a menu like sandwiches or other dessert recipes. The result shows that bacon in sandwiches have the biggest improvement in ratings, but for those bacon dessert lovers, it is not. IBM researchers also jumped into food industry analytics by creating a computer program that generates original recipes. Personally, I really like this idea, because it will help restaurants to deliver new recipes more convenient and purely creative also unusual.
Other than that, I also learned that one of my favourite restaurants which is McDonalds use this trend analytics to understand consumers’ better. McDonalds attempt to give their best services on each individual restaurant and try to improve as a whole, also to be updated of consumer demand in their drive-thru experiences.
