In this globalization
era, modern agriculture and bees are inseparable. Our earth ecosystem depends
so much on pollinators, which are a group of animals that moves pollen from the
male anther of a flower to the female stigma of a flower. However, the population
of pollinators keep decreasing over the time. There are many causes that resulted
in the decreasing number of pollinators, such as habitat destruction,
urbanization, use of pesticides, pollution, fragmentation of natural flowering
habitats, predators, parasites, and climate change. This problem is really crucial
looking at how pollinators could affect our food production and air we use
daily. As a result, Sabiha Rumani Malik decided to create the world bee project
as an answer to our concern. This project collaborates with Oracle by using artificial
intelligence, internet of things and big data to work on the problem.
The world bee project
main goals are to control and monitor the population of bees in order to prevent
it from extinction. The project started in 2014 by gathering scientists all around
the world to discuss about this matter. After 4 years of operation, in 2018 they
decided to partner up with Oracle Cloud technology to better understand and
solve the problems.
How exactly is
technology work in saving the bees? First of all is by using the internet-of-things
sensors, including microphones and cameras to track on the predators and
collect data from the bees and hives. Then, the data collected will be transferred
to Oracle Cloud, where artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms will analyze the
data. They will produce information about behaviors of the hive. Next, this information
will be used by the beekepeers and conservationists to create a solution to
protect the bees. In conclusion, with now improved technology everything could
be solved easily and help our daily problems especially in modern agriculture.

I think the article that Lusi chose is very interesting because it is a new topic for me. I have never heard that Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Big Data can be helpful in the agriculture field especially in saving bees.
According to the article, in 2014, scientists gathered and created a project called “The World Bee Project”. Its main goals are to control and monitor the population of the bees to prevent them from extinction. I am impressed by the scientist idea to work with Oracle Cloud technology to help them achieve their project’s goals.
It is amazing that they combine three technologies, such as artificial intelligence, internet of things and big data to save bees. First, they use internet of things sensors to track predators and collect data from the bees and hives. Second, after the data is transferred to Oracle Cloud, it will be analyzed using artificial intelligence. Third, they will produce information about the hive’s behavior. Finally, scientists will use this data to come up with a solution to save the population of the bees from extinction.
In my opinion, the fact that earth ecosystem depends on pollinators needs more attention from people like us and not only scientists. We should care more to our environment if we don’t want to starve and die. According to the article, the numbers of pollinators are decreasing. Even though technology can help in many ways, I think it is important for us to care about earth too. We can’t always depend in using technology to solve problems.
