As we all know, Corona virus outbreak has been a big deal since early 2020. Corona virus can be transmitted easily from one person to another. This is a major problem because the number of people who are infected are increasing every day. Asiatimes.com reported that in order to prevent the increasing number of infected people, China has come up with a new program which allow Chinese authorities to know the chain of the virus transmission.
Big data analysis helps China in establishing this program. Basically, China uses the data from smartphone users. All smartphone users need to enable their GPS so that Chinese authorities can have the users’ information of their itinerary. If a user is infected with the virus, this kind of information will help Chinese government to estimate and match the location with other known location that has infected individuals or groups. Other than that, China also uses smartphone users’ electronic records of purchasing medicines to know which individuals are sick and who might have sneak off from self-quarantine.
Western countries who do not have control over their citizens’ personal information cannot apply this program. For example, Google can know where you have been but United States’ public health authorities cannot use the data since they are not allowed to use personal information. In my opinion, China has done a great job in making a good use of big data and artificial intelligence to prevent the spread of corona virus. Using personal information might be a drawback but in this case, it is very important to know where people have visited so that the spread of corona virus can be minimized.

Coronavirus is the most popular word in the world this year. It is very big case that is happening all over the world. Kathleen chose a really great article since it talks about how AI and Big Data can help people during this pandemic. According to the article that Kathleen shared, China has come up with an idea to create a program which is using AI and Big Data to help in controlling the numbers of people infected by this deadly virus.

I have the same opinion with Kathleen, China’s idea in using artificial intelligence and big data to make this kind of program deserve a round of applause. During this pandemic, it has been a challenge to keep the numbers of infected individuals low. With the help of the program that China has created, prevention of the spread of the coronavirus can be achieved and it is easier to control people who are not obedient. However, this program is not available for all countries because some countries do not have control of their citizen’s personal information.

Even though this program is very useful during this pandemic, I do not fully agree with using personal information to track a person’s whereabouts. Privacy is a very serious thing to keep a secret. It will become a dangerous situation for people when their personal information is disclosed or got stolen by another party for malicious purposes. It is important for a country to ensure the protection of their citizen’s privacy. For example, creating a law to protect their citizens regarding their personal information which are used in the internet, etc. If the authorities are trustworthy, then it is fine for them to use their citizen’s personal information for emergency purposes like this.

  2. Since corona virus being a hot topic in every country in the world, I think this blog really brought up an interesting thing to read. China is the country that we all believed to be the source of the first corona virus spreads. Some conspiracy told that China purposely spread the virus from the laboratory in Wuhan and some also said that’s because of the market located in Wuhan. That are some of the information that we still don’t know whether it is true or not. But, big data can’t never lie about what it gets.

China uses AI to track their citizens based on their itinerary locations they have visited using smartphone’s GPS. Those who have visited some certain places that is confirmed to be infected will be informed to do a test and self-quarantine. However, this is quite concerning because they abuse their citizen privacy. Even though it is a great innovation for China to prevent the further corona virus spread problem, they still need their citizen permission to track them daily. And again, every country has its own policy and authorities.

Other than that, we can use AI or big data to predict the corona virus patient itinerary and relatives they are contacted with to stop it from spreading. Lastly, with or without AI or big data, please be aware and follow the policy. Let’s help all the first liner to stop it from spreading and end is pandemic together so we can have more quality time soon.

With the current Corona Virus or Covid-19 cases that keep growing bigger and bigger all around the world, I think this topic that Kathleen chose is really relevant for us. As we all know, this is considered as a very important issue nowadays because the pandemics is really dangerous because they attack all the people no matter their ages. All people from children, teenagers, adult every where around the world could be infected with the virus even though some people may not notice it because in some cases people can be infected without showing any symptoms. This virus started back in 2019 at Wuhan, China and have spread across country by country. Despite China being the place that started the virus outbreaks, they did a really great job handling the situation fast and efficient. According to the blog Kathleen wrote, China uses global positioning system or GPS to track down their citizens location and information. This data helps the government to have a better control for the infected people. China’s government also uses the smartphone user’s electronic records of purchasing medicines in order to know which of their citizen who is sick or who might have sneak from the self-quarantine. On the other side, Western countries cannot use the same method as China because they are not as free as China when dealing with their citizens’ personal information. In western countries, it is restricted to use such personal data or information because it is considered to be against the law.

  5. Your post was indeed an interesting read. However, I think that though big data is helping us in terms of tracking people’s whereabouts and who has come into contact with whom, it is also an example of how big data can and is being used without our consent. It just makes me wonder, what else could big data be used for? In my opinion, it crosses a privacy border. It is comparable to a house prisoner who is being tracked with electronic tagging or one of those house arrest bracelets.
Maybe if it were in another country; maybe one with a democracy, it would not seem as harsh as it does with a communist country. Don’t get me wrong, this is not to say that I dislike communism or China, I’m merely saying that it seems very strict because of the type of government, but that may not necessarily be the case.

Another great example of the use of big data with regards to COVID19 would be the implementation of the map tracking apps that is available. I think this is making exceptional use of big data. In this case, nobody feels like their privacy is being invaded. In addition, businesses or pharmacies are able to get a flow of customers when they are in stock and avoid having to constantly tell people “mai wan le” or sold out lol. It also saves the customers time from having to from pharmacy to pharmacy in search of masks.

Using big data for our benefit an advancement is good, but sometimes we need to ask ourselves: at what cost?
