A data analyst helps companies understand data and use that data to make informed or calculated decisions.



The article mentions five skills that anyone would need to become a data analyst. While there are other skills that would be beneficial, the skills mentioned in this article include: Programming, Data Warehousing, Computational Framework, Quantitative Aptitude and Statistics and Business Knoledge.





1)    Programming



Although a big data analyst does not need to be a master in programming, a big data analyst should be very comfortable with coding. Big data is still changing, and people are still trying to understand it. A lot of customization is needed when dealing with unstructured data. Of all the languages, Java, Python and R are the most essential.



2)    Data Warehousing



Data warehousing is referred to as a process of collecting, managing, and storing data from different sources. As a data analyst, you would need to have knowledge of relational and non-relational database systems. Some examples of database systems are Myraql, Oracle and DB2, Hbase, HDFS.



3)    Computational Frameworks



Frameworks such as the Apache series, MapReduce and Hadoop can help in Big Data processing. A background in computational frameworks will be a plus as a data analyst.



4)    Quantitative Aptitude and Statistics

Statistics is seen as a building block for any data analyst, as it deals with probability and distribution, hypothesis testing and variables which are needed for analyzing data.



5)    Business Knowledge



It is essential and even crucial that a data analyst is aware of what exactly he or she is working on. Data analysts are currently in demand. One of the main reasons for this is it is not very easy or common to find  person with a complete or thorough understanding of statistics, business and the technical parts of it (such as programming) and are able to apply their knowledge.
