The ten applications are banking and securities, communications, media and entertainment, healthcare providers, education, manufacturing and natural resources, government, Insurance, retail and wholesale trade, transportation and energy and utilities.

Industry influencers, academicians, and other prominent stakeholders certainly agree that big data has become a big game-changer in most, if not all, types of modern industries over the last few years. As big data continues to permeate our day-to-day lives, there has been a significant shift of focus from the hype surrounding it to finding real value in its use.

For banking and securities industry, big data is used for monitor financial market activity, also for risk analytics. Big Data providers are specific to this industry includes 1010data, Panopticon Software, Streambase Systems, Nice Actimize, and Quartet FS.
Big data in the communications, media and entertainment industry can help to create content for different target audiences, recommend content on demand and measure content performance. For example, Spotify uses Hadoop big data analytics, to collect data from its millions of users worldwide and then uses the analyzed data to give informed music recommendations to individual users. About healthcare sector, some hospitals use data collected from a cell phone app, from millions of patients, to allow doctors to use evidence-based medicine as opposed to administering several medical/lab tests to all patients who go to the hospital.

As the article mentions, big data plays an important role and has a wide range of application in our life. With this in mind, having a bird’s eye view of big data and its application in different industries can help us to know more about the type of business even find out the trending of future.

This blog provides information about service offerings from Big Data providers for various industries. Firstly, I thought Big Data might useful for logistics industry only.     From my direct experience of working in communication industry, I realize that Big Data can help solve many challenges I have faced. It helps analyzing consumers data for creating consumer profiles. For example, creating contents for different target audiences or measuring content performance.

    After all, Big Data seems to play an important role in our daily lives. Therefore, it is very crucial for us to better understand the basic knowledge of Big Data in order to adopt it in the future working life.
